Decoding College: Charting Your New World

Close your eyes and imagine—a hallway that bends and twists like a maze, unfamiliar faces at every corner. College seems like an enormous puzzle—sometimes an exciting one, sometimes a perplexing one. this site The College Knowledge Challenge hopes to provide those answers for you, cutting through the clutter.

An Example. Think of etiquette within the dining hall, who would have thought this would have so much social significance? Or that professors despite their scholarly ways are basically walking, living encyclopedias. Sam, my friend went to his first philosophy class on the first day expecting a heavy dialogue. Instead, Professor Jensen was passing out rubber ducks to prompt abstract thought. Quite the plot twist, eh?

College actually is a long string of life lessons disguised as organized learning. With an inquisitive nature and a backpack that hopefully is equipped, you will begin to figure that out. The College Knowledge Challenge makes it feel more like following a treasure map then goose chasing.

There is a social tornado, and its called college. All sort of things will be thrown at you, one day after the other, it doesn’t stop. From friends who become family, disagreements inside the cafeteria that turned into late night study sessions. Then to alliances that are forged complaining about the slow Wi-Fi. Jasmine, my hall mate and a book lover, mentioned book club meetings was less about books and more about world diplomacy–with the traditional coffee of course.

Academic? Hang on tight because it is going to be bumpy. The library either becomes the center of all your activities—a fortress of knowledge or a getaway. What about group projects? That weight you shared is now on you, sprinkle in a unified huddle every now and then. Dive into your studies but please do not forget to breathe; besides watching Netflix surely counts towards cultural enrichment, does it not?

What’s most interesting is that opportunities start to surface. Clubs, internships, societies — a smorgasbord of culture wanting your attention every second you spend on campus. It is impossible to dip your toes in a few of these and will be tempted by each. Our resident Carlos went square dancing, joined a bio society, and climbed rocks in one semester because he could see what would stick. It was just as chaotic as it was colorful.

When the weeks shoot past so fast that it’s like a train without breaks, just stop. Ca note that this College Knowledge Challenge isn’t just about didactics—it’s a storyline unfolding; yours. It’s a dredging up of things that excite you or make you wag your tail. Yes, long nights will be spotted on the calendar, but they inevitably will give way to new mornings. Be cognizant that every puzzle has it’s match; Although piecing them together in your own, unique way is part of the fun.
